TOUR DESCRIPTION

Zadar Shore Excursion

This full day Zadar shore trip visits two different Croatian islands so that you can explore the old towns of both Nin and Pag. You enjoy walking tours in both towns plus some free time.

Nin is the oldest Croatian royal town situated on a little island in the middle of a shallow lagoon, connected to the mainland by two stone bridges. During Roman rule Nin was an important sea port. The city was destroyed several time throughout history, most recently in 1646 when Venice sacrificed it in order to save the fort of Zadar from Turkish invasion. But what most clearly connects the history of Nin with today is the fact that it was the place where the Croatian state was born.

Upon arrival you will enjoy a walk of the old town including seeing the smallest cathedral in the world and the coronation Church of St. Nicholas, as well as Queen's Beach which one of the most beautiful beaches in the Croatia. In fact, according to the US based Travel Channel, Queen's Beach is at the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Nin is also well known for its medicinal mud (called peloid) which reliably cures many illnesses. It is documented that the mud was used as long ago as Roman times, but the assumption is that there was even a spa here in prehistoric times. Its effectiveness has been tested by thousands of people who have used the mud to treat various ailments and diseases for decades.

After some free time for lunch you drive to the island of Pag, the second longest island in the Adriatic

Upon arrival you will explore one of the two main resort town's on Pag. The town of Pag is famous for its lace-making and the local sheep's milk cheese. You definitely have to sample both. You will enjoy a walking tour of the old town where there are a number of churches including the 15th century Church of the Assumption and the Church of St George which is named after the town's patron saint. You also see the Rector's Palace which is located on the town's main square. This building was once the residence of the Venice appointed Duke, who governed the island.

You will be able to see glimpses of the 15th century walls and the only remaining towers that once fortified the town. While not the most interesting site. You will see evidence of salt production which has been an important part of the island's history and development.

At the end of the tour, you return to the pier in Zadar.
