Hamburg Shore Excursion
This half day Hamburg shore trip visits the lovely medieval old town of Luneburg. The town is well known among Germans, but less known to foreign travelers. If you are looking for something charming and off the beaten path, this is a great option.
After meeting your guide, you immediately depart for Luneburg which is situated on the Ilmenau River about 30 miles south of Hamburg. The city is rich in tradition, with an over 1,000-year history, which is closely connected with salt, the "white gold" of the Middle Ages. The salt mines made Luneburg a rich and powerful town and an important member of the Hanseatic League.
To appreciate the beauty of this medieval city, you will enjoy a walking tour of the old town. The many important historical buildings, as exemplified by the brick patrician houses built in the north Gothic style, testify to the prosperity of the city in the Middle Ages. Even today, salt plays an important role in Luneburg's status as a spa town. Many illnesses are treated through salt and water therapies.
During your walk along small cobbled alleyways you will see the remains of the inner city wall, which dates back to 1297. You will be impressed by the historical town hall (Rathaus) which was built around 1240. You encounter other fascinating buildings steeped in cultural history such as St. Nicholas Church which was built in the 15th century. A great photo stop is at the wooden mill and Luneburg's landmark, the Old Wood Crane in the tiny harbor.
After your walking tour you have free time to explore on your own. There are many caf̩s with scenic views situated on the small harbor overlooking the weir. Enjoy some German cake and coffee or have a German beer with a great view. If you prefer to do some shopping, there are plenty of options, however, please note that most shops are closed on Sundays.
