Valletta Shore Excursion
This Valletta shore trip is a great option for first time visitors to Malta. You visit Valletta's top sites and then after a lunch break you drive into the countryside to visit the well preserved medieval village of Mdina.
After meeting your private licensed guide at the pier you drive to the city center where you enjoy a walking tour of Valletta. In the 16th century Valletta was built as the Capital city of Malta by the Knights of St. John. You start your tour with a visit to the Upper Barrakka Gardens perched high above the city offering fantastic views of the Grand Harbor and the three cities across the water. It is on this outlook that the Knights of St. John practiced fencing to defend their galleys anchored below.
Next you walk along Republic Street, the main pedestrian street in the city, to Valletta's most important historic and artistic treasure, St. John's Co-Cathedral. Dating to the 16th century, its interior is decorated with carved walls, ornate columns, lavish paintings and tapestries, and pavement made of four hundred inlaid marble slabs that memorialize knights from all corners of Europe. Two masterpieces by Caravaggio hang in the Oratory.
Then you visit the Grandmaster's Palace, housing the parliament and the president's office. In the Tapestry Chambers you'll linger, letting your eyes adjust to the low light and marvel at the priceless Gobelins tapestries. You'll see the suits of armor standing at attention in the halls and elaborate state rooms around the complexes lovely courtyards.
After visiting the Palace you enjoy free time to have lunch (meal not included).
After lunch you drive to the charming town of Mdina, known as the Silent City. Once the capital city of Malta, it is like entering another world as you walk across the moat and into the massive gates of this beautifully preserved medieval enclave. You will enjoy a stroll past the Baroque style cathedral, and through the narrow, winding streets that look like a perfect movie set. You will see small horse drawn carriages and climb the bastions to take in the panoramic views of Malta's countryside from the massive walls.
Finally, as with all good things your time will come to an end, and your driver and guide will take you back to the pier in Valletta.
