Akureyri Shore Excursion
This Akureyri shore trip explores the top sites at Lake Myvatn including Dimmuborgir, the Hverir geothermal area and Skutustadagigar. An added a bonus is a stop to see the beautiful Godafoss waterfall.
After meeting your guide in Akureyri you start the journey towards Lake Myvatn. About half way there is a stop at the Godafoss waterfall which is one of the most stunning in all of Iceland. The name of the falls means, waterfall of the Gods, and your guide will explain the legend which brought this name. The falls are about 40 feet high and 100 feet wide.
After this magical visit you continue on the Lake Myvatn, the fourth largest lake in Iceland. This lake and the sites nearby are one of Iceland's best natural attractions. Bird watchers are in for a treat as there is an abundant birdlife here and more species of ducks than anywhere in the world.
The lake has many small islands, some of which are pseudocraters, formed by steam explosions and boiling lava. These unique islands are known as Skutustadagigar.
Close to the lake is Dimmuborgir, a fascinating area of unusual shaped lava formations and volcanic caves. This area is referred to as the Dark Cities and your guide will explain where these reference came from.
Finally is a stop at Hverir, located at the foot of the Namafjall volcanic mountain. This geothermal area includes fumaroles, mud pools, steam vents and sulfur pits.
Note: Even if you are visiting in the middle of summer, please wear warm clothing and comfortable walking shoes, preferably hiking shoes.
Mobility: NO wheelchairs
