Amalfi (Postino) Shore Excursion
This Amalfi shore trip visits the lesser known archaeological site of Herculaneum and also a drive along the Amalfi Coast with stops in Positano and the town of Amalfi. It is an excellent option for those who have already been to Pompeii.
After meeting you driver guide you have some time to explore Amalfi, which legend says, was created by Hercules to be the most
beautiful setting possible for the final resting place of a beautiful
nymph he loved. History tells us that the Romans built the town in the
5th century AD.
Next you start your drive along the Amalfi Coast
which stretches about 50 miles from the tip of the Sorrento Peninsula
to the city of Salerno. This drive is famous for its amazing views of
quaint fishing villages and luxury hotels that cling to the cliffs above
the sparkling blue sea. With each hairpin turn of the road you'll be
astonished by another vista. You'll drive the most popular and dramatic
portion of the coastline from Amalfi to Positano, which can easily take 3
hours (pending traffic).
You stop in the town of Positano, one
of the most popular resort towns in the world. Narrow streets which are
sometimes no more than staircases are lined with shops and caf̩s leading
from the main road to the beautiful beaches below.
You have time to have lunch (meal not included) in one of these towns.
This afternoon you leave the coast and drive to Herculaneum where you have time to explore the site by audio guide. Herculaneum, like its more famous neighbor Pompeii, was buried under volcanic ash when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. After ash covered the city it was then inundated by mud slides. When the ancient city was rediscovered in 1711 it was nearly 65 feet below the surface.
Today only a small portion of the city has been excavated but it is still very impressive. While Pompeii was a typical working town, Herculaneum was a posh sea side resort for wealthy Romans. You'll be amazed by the condition of the buildings, villas and carvings that have survived nearly two thousand years. Herculaneum is as impressive as Pompeii but not as crowded with tourists. If you have been to Pompeii in the past, this is a natural for your next visit to the region.
At the end of the excursion you return to Amalfi.
