TOUR DESCRIPTION

Argostoli Shore Excursion

The highlight of this Argostoli shore trip is a visit to the island's Folk Museum and the beautiful subterranean cave lake of Melissani. Also included are stops at the Lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi, the Acquit WWII Memorial and Myrtos Beach.

After meeting your guide at the port of Argostoli you start a scenic drive where you will see the light House of Saint Theodoroi which lies on a man-made peninsula close to Argostoli. It is a circular structure with 20 columns and its tower is 25 feet tall. The building has a rather simple and Doric architectural style and it was built in 1828 by the British administrator Charles Napier, who ruled the island that time.

From there you will drive to Acquit Memorial which sits at the location of the mass execution of the men of the Italian 33rd Acquit Infantry Division. This event took place following the Italian armistice during the Second World War. About 5000 soldiers were massacred by German soldiers and others drowned in the event. The massacre provided the historical background to the novel Captain Corellis Mandolin, which later became a Hollywood film. It was one of the largest prisoner of war massacres during the war.

You will visit the Folklore Museum which features costumes, everyday utensils and tools that show life on Cephalonia during the 19th century. You also see personal items from some of the English Governors of Cephalonia and photos of the island before the earthquake of 1953. Also in the museum are displays of local jewellery, icons, and other holy items.

Next you take the coastal road to the Cave Lake of Melissani. When you arrive at the lake you walk a short distance down a tunnel which leads to the beautiful underground lake. You board small wooden boats for the short trip around the lake and the surrounding caves.

Before you return to the pier you have a photo stop at the beautiful Myrtos beach with its stunning aqua waters.

Mobility: NO wheelchairs (lake not accessible)
