Arrecife Shore Excursion
This Arrecife shore trip visits the top sites on the island including the Timanfaya National Park and the Jameos del Agua Cave. There is also time to sample local wine from the unusual vineyards of La Geria.
Lanzarote is one of the oldest of the Canary Islands and is the result of volcanic activity that began in this part of the Atlantic Ocean 22 million years ago. The passing millennia have molded its landscape, giving it a truly spectacular countryside which is listed as an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The impressive fields of solidified lava have converted Timanfaya National Park into the land of the volcanoes.
After meeting your guide you depart for the National park which is divided into two ecosystems: land and marine. The land is dominated by a lunar landscape and you see different environmental features such as; volcanic cones, seas of lava, older areas which are not covered by recent lava so vegetation abounds, and cliffs. The formations found in the marine ecosystem are; geysers, hot springs, rocks and black sandy beaches. In this exceptional landscape, numerous species have developed and have been the subject of many studies.
Over time, the local inhabitants have learned to live alongside this unusual and pretty landscape, and have learned to dry farm melons, onions, tomatoes and also vines. In La Geria, famous for its unusual vineyards, you will have the opportunity to visit a typical wine cellar where you learn about this unique wine growing region and of course, taste the Lanzarote wine.
This afternoon you visit the Jameos del Agua cave. C̩sar Manrique was fascinated by Lanzarote's unique volcanic landscape, which others thought of as an arid inhospitable desert. For him, the island's volcanic essence was synonymous with beauty, and it was out of respect, admiration and gratitude for this environment (where he grew up) that he developed his work. He created a natural auditorium that is perfectly integrated into a whimsical volcanic formation. Its beauty, contrast of light and colors make it a creation admired the world over. This site encapsulates what Manrique did throughout his life, compose spaces in which human contributions were perfectly integrated into the natural surroundings, thereby magnifying their beauty and value.
At the end of your tour you return to Arrecife.
Mobility: Folding wheelchair OK, some sites may be inaccessible (advance notice required)
