This Carrara shore trip visits Pisa's Field of Miracle where you have time to marvel at the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the other historic buildings nearby. It's an excellent option for those who only want a half day tour.
After meeting your driver guide, you drive to Pisa to visit the Piazza dei Miracoli or Field of Miracles. This pedestrian area is one of the finest architectural ensembles in the world and is home to the buildings that have made Pisa famous. Those buildings include; the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Duomo (cathedral), the Baptistery and the burial grounds of the Campo Santo.
The Cathedral of Pisa is a Romanesque masterpiece dating back to the 11th century. It was built to serve the wealthy mercantile traders of Pisa. At the time the area was mostly open space and there was no bell tower or baptistery.
About 20 years later construction of the Baptistery began with the architect trying to design a structure to complement the Cathedral. In doing so, he repeated the narrow arches supported by intricate capitals on plain columns, like seen on the cathedral facade.
Another 20 years later construction on the Tower of Pisa began. However, construction took almost 200 years because the tilt became evident early so work would stop until a plan to correct the tilt could be devised. Today it is that tilt which draws people from all over the world to see it.
While you are here you have time to enjoy these marvelous sites and also enjoy a drink in a caf̩ or a typical Italian ice cream.
After your time here, you are brought back to the pier in Carrara.
