Cherbourg Shore Excursion
This tour is NOT currently being offered.
The focus of this half day Cherbourg shore trip are the D-Day Landings at Utah Beach as well as the 82nd Airborne US Paratroop Landings in the small village of Sainte Mere Eglise. A visit to the Utah Beach Museum and some free time in the village are included.
After meeting your driver-guide at the Cherbourg pier you depart for Utah Beach, located on Normandy's shoreline and one of the two beaches were the American's landed on D-Day. While you are here you will visit the Utah Beach Museum. The museum explains the planning and execution of the American landings.
Your first stop is at Omaha Beach. Omaha was one of two beaches where the Americans landed, but this one was the deadliest scene of the landings. This is done through a series of 10 sequences from planning, preparation and ultimately success. You will see many objects and vehicles from that day as you learn the history.
Next you visit the small town of Sainte Mere Eglise, which is a few miles inland from Utah Beach. This town was the heart of the jump zone for the American 82nd Airborne forces. While you are here you will see the now famous church where one the jumper's parachute got caught on the church tower, leaving him dangling in the air. Your driver-guide will give you a brief orientation of the village and then you have some free time to explore as you wish.
At the end of the day you return to the pier in Cherbourg.
