TOUR DESCRIPTION

Gdynia Shore Excursion

This tour visits the Memorial and Museum located at the former Stutthof Concentration Camp, the place of death for over 85,000 people, although the actual number killed is assumed to be much greater. The excursion includes a visit to the camp site and its poignant museum.

After meeting your guide you immediately depart for the town of Sztutowo where the Stutthof concentration camp is located. This was the first Nazi camp built outside of Germany and was the last camp liberated by Allied forces. Originally a small prison for Poles and P.O.W.'s, the camp would become the site for some of the worst atrocities of the War.

Between 1939 and 1945, 127,000 prisoners were officially registered in the camp, but those who were immediately singled out for execution were not registered at all, so there is no way of knowing the exact number or people brought to Stutthof.

Finally liberated on May 9, 1945 by the Soviet Army, the camp was shut down and its prisoners were released. People from 26 different nations had been kept there, a testament to the scale of the Nazi war effort.

Today a visit to the camp site and its museum takes about 2 hours. The museum shows a variety of short films and also contains artifacts such as jewelry, art work and clothing which was found after the liberation.

After a sobering visit to this memorial, you return Gdynia, never to forget the past.

Mobility: Folding wheelchairs OK (some areas may be restricted, advance notice required)
