This
Kalamata shore trip acquaints you with medieval Greece. You will visit the castle of Methoni and the Neokastro Fortress which is located in the picturesque town of Pylos.
After meeting your guide your first stop is at the Castle of Methoni which is the most important fortification in Greece, a complete walled city with a natural harbor. Today, despite the fact that they were almost destroyed the walls of the fort are still quite impressive. In the courtyards of the walls there are still some buildings, such as houses of noble Venetians, Turkish baths, a Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia and the Church of the Transfiguration.
Later you drive to the town of Pylos to see the Neokastro Fortress which was built by the Turks in order to control the southern entrance to the bay of Navarino. The fate of the fortress was not different than any other in the area, being owned by the Turks, then the Venetians, then Turks and so on. In the fortress there are still many preserved buildings, such as the water tank and the ruins of the Gothic Cathedral of Transfiguration. In 1987, the reconstruction was of Neokastro fortress was completed and today it is the National Center for Underwater Archaeology in Pylos.
