Leith Shore Excursion - This full day tour includes
Stirling Castle, which is considered one of Scotland's most magnificent
castles. After free time for lunch you then visit Linlithgow Palace,
the place where Mary Stuart (Queen of Scots) was born.
After meeting your private guide at the pier you immediately depart for
Stirling. In route you enjoy a short stop to see the spectacular 19th
century Forth Rail Bridge which is a remarkable cantilever structure
that is regarded as an engineering marvel. The bridge was built to carry
the two tracks of the North British Railway one and a half miles over
the Firth of Forth between South and North Queensferry, at a height of
150 feet above the high tide.
Next is the highlight of the day, a visit to Stirling Castle which is built on a rocky
outcrop offering commanding views for many miles around. It was built as
an almost impregnable fortification, and visitors can explore many
aspects of its long military history, particularly during the Wars of
Independence in the 1300s. But it was also an important and luxurious
royal palace. Visitors today can gain an insight into the life of
Scotland's royal court, especially that of James V.
Following the castle visit is free time for lunch in a typical Scottish pub.
Later this afternoon you visit Linlithgow Palace, the place where Mary
Stuart was born. She later became the Queen of Scots . You will admire
the Great Hall with its hugh fireplace and the elaborately carved
fountain which was a wedding gift from James V to his wife in 1538.
Sitting in the courtyard of the palace, it is the oldest fountain in
Britain.
Following this stop you return to the pier.
