Nessebar Shore Excursions
This
private Nessebar cruise excursion combines a walking tour of the resort town of Nessebar along with a visit to a small village where you meet the locals and experience Bulgarian village life. You enjoy local snacks and drinks as part of your excursion.
Nessebar (also known as Nessebur) is an ancient town but also one of the
most popular seaside resorts on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. The old
town is located on a
peninsula which was once an island but has since become part of the
mainland via a man-made isthmus. In the 1950s the town became designated
a "museum-city" because of the rich amount of historical sites located
in such a small area. The town was added to the list of World Heritage
Sites in 1983 and is often referred to as the "Pearl of the Black Sea".
After meeting your guide you enjoy a walking tour through the labyrinth
of Nessebar's narrow cobbled streets which are home to many beautiful
wooden houses from the Bulgarian Revival period. The old town is only
about 1 mile long and a quarter mile wide so there are a lot of
important sites located in a small area.
Around almost every corner you will find one of the unique
churches which help to create the uniqueness of Old Nessebar. During
your walk you will see Christ Pantokrator, St. Stefan, St. John
Aliturgetos, St. John the Baptist, St. Archangels Gavrail and Michael,
St. Paraskeva, St. Spas church and St. Sofia.
You also see several cultural monuments on the island including
the Byzantine fortified walls, the ruins of Rome baths and the Turkish
bath and fountain. These sites combined help to illustrate the varied
history that this small island has endured.
Your tour also includes a visit to the Archeological museum of Nessebar where you enjoy some of
the treasures that were discovered on the island.
Next you enjoy the beautiful scenery including pastures and the
lavender massif (blossom in July) during your drive to the village of
Erketch. This charming village enjoy beautiful views as it sits at an
elevation of almost 1600 feet above sea level. Here nature, centuries
old traditions and everyday life coexist together.
In the village of Erketch you will visit a local family. The hosts will show you their vegetable garden and then invite you to taste some of the fruits and vegetables which they have grown. A special treat is the sampling of the local home-made brandy called rakia. You can also taste banitsa (traditional cheese pastry) and some home-made yoghurt.
You will visit a local house which is an old manufacturer of
lemonade and also houses a small museum showing authentic traditional
clothes and costumes. You will have the opportunity to wear these
costumes and take some pictures if you wish.
After exploring typical life in these charming villages you will be brought back to Nessebur.
