Palermo Shore Excursion - This tour visits Selinunte which is the largest archeological park in Europe with nearly 700 acres including numerous temples, shrines, altars and necropolis.
For fans of ancient Greece, this is a highlight to a visit to Sicily.
After meeting your guide you drive to the site at Selinunte, which was a Greek city founded around the year 650 BC. It stands on a plain overlooking sandy beaches and the beautiful sea, not far from the modern towns of Marsala and Agrigento, on the southern coast of Sicily. The majority of the temples at Selinunte were built around 500 BC using the Doric architectural style.
The ancient city of Selinunte was destroyed by its inhabitants as they prepared to flee from the invading Romans. From here the citizens went to live on the acropolis, or high city, which featured five temples and had as many as 30,000 people, not including slaves.
Recent diggings brought to light a ring of walls and a gate which surrounded the city to protect them from the invaders.
There are several large necropolises (cemetery's) in Selinunte which contain many graves giving experts a clue into the number of people who lived here. These graves have also yielded thousands of objects, such as Greek vases and terracotta statuettes.
Your local guide will explore the park with you and recount its history.
After a detailed tour of the site you will have free time to enjoy lunch before returning to Palermo.
