TOUR DESCRIPTION

Prague City Tour

This Prague walking tour focuses on the sites located in the Old Town and Jewish Quarter of Prague. You see the Tyn Church, the Town Hall, the astronomical clock and then visit sites in the Jewish Quarter such as the Old-New Synagogue and the Old Jewish Cemetery. This is the only Jewish municipal area in Central Europe that survived the Holocaust.

Your guide will meet you at your Old Town hotel and you begin your walk of the Old Town Square which is considered the most significant square of historical Prague. The square is bordered by cafes and restaurants, and full of life. You see Tyn Church, St. Nicholas Church, the Jan Hus Memorial and the Town Hall with is famous Tower. You will gather with others to see the amazing astronomical clock. This medieval clock has been keeping accurate time since 1410, making it the oldest such clock in the world and a popular draw for visitors. Your guide will explain to you how the clock works and how to read the current time on it.

Then on to the Jewish Quarter, known as Josefov. This area dates back to the 13th century and is fascinating to visitors of all faiths. You visit the Old-New Synagogue which was built in 1270, making it the oldest synagogue in Central Europe. Your guide will point out the original interior wrought-iron grill and chandeliers. It is still a house of prayer and the main synagogue of the small Prague Jewish community. It is said that the body of Golem (allegedly created by Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel) lies in the attic where the genizah of Prague's community is kept.

This tour can be customized to your interests as entry tickets to the following sites in the Jewish Quarter are included: The Maisel Synagogue, The Spanish Synagogue, The Klausen Synagogue, The Pinkas Synagogue, Old Jewish Cemetery and The Old New Synagogue.

We strongly recommend that all visitors visit the Old Jewish Cemetery which was established in the mid-15th century and served as a burial site until 1787. Among the over 12,000 tombstones in this small serene space are those of Rabbi Jehuda Low (1609) and Mordechai Maisel (1601).

You end your tour in the Jewish Quarter so you can further explore, shop or enjoy a beer and meal.
