Salzburg Walking Tour

This Salzburg walking tour is similar to the shorter walking tour but it is extended to add a visit to the Mozart Residence and the Fortress Hohensalzburg (Salzburg Castle). Other sites seen include Mirabell Gardens, Mozart´s Birthplace, St. Peter's Abbey and the Salzburg Cathedral.

Your guide will meet you at your hotel and depending on its location you may start your tour in the baroque style Neustadt, or new town, which is home to the Mirabell Palace and Gardens. This is "modern Salzburg" dating back to the 17th century. The beautiful gardens were used for many scenes in the Sound of Music and they over wonderful views to the old Fortress in the distance.

Next you enjoy a visit to the Mozart Residence where the famous composer lived for 14 years of his early life. You will learn about his life here in Salzburg and see one of his pianos and some of his original scripts.

Next you cross one of the bridges over the Salzach River and enter the old town of Salzburg. One of the first sites seen in the old town is the Mozart Birth House. Next you walk along the Getreidegasse, which is a medieval alley but today the most famous shopping street in the city. Your guide will lead you to Mozart's Square which is the heart of the city and hosts a memorial to the famous composer.

Next up you go to the Salzburg Cathedral which also dates to the Baroque period and is one of the most visited sites in the city. Nearby is St. Peter's Abbey and Cemetery which was founded in the year 696 and was also used in the filming of the Sound of Music.

You end the tour with a visit to the Salzburg Castle, known locally as the Fortress Hohensalzburg, which looms on the hill above the city. To reach the castle you take a funicular up the hill where you enjoy stunning views before entering the castle to see some of the most important rooms. Your guide will share history and stories about the castle's past.
