This full day Stockholm shore trip packs in the best sights of Stockholm including the Vasa Museum, the Old Town, the famous City Hall and the open-air museum of Skansen, with over 150 historic buildings from all over Sweden.
You start your tour at the beautiful City Hall. The building was built in 1923 and today its high spire topped with three golden crowns has become the symbol of Stockholm. The Blue Hall is the location where the world famous Nobel Prize banquet takes place each year, followed by a ball in the Golden Hall. You will be amazed by the mosaics and murals which line the interior.
Next you drive to Fjällgatan for a panoramic photo stop. This area sits on a cliff where you enjoy well preserved wooden buildings dating from the 1700s and fantastic views of Stockholm.
Following this beautiful drive you visit the Old Town, known as Gamla Stan. The city of Stockholm is made up of 14 islands and peninsulas which are connected by bridges. The Old Town encompasses three of these islands. You will see the Royal Palace and Cathedral (Stockholm's Oldest Building) on foot, plus enjoy the narrow cobbled streets that are lined with antique shops and boutiques.
You have free time for lunch (meal not included) or shopping.
Later you drive to the island of Djurg̴rden, or "Royal Game Park". The island is part of the National Park system and is the favorite recreation area for both locals and tourists.
Located on the island is the Vasa Museum, Scandinavia most visited museum. The impressive warship Vasa sank on her maiden voyage in 1628 but it was salvaged 333 years later in 1961. She has since been restored and can now be seen with her complete rigging at the Vasa Museum. This ship is the only remaining, intact 17th century ship in the world and is certain to impress both young and old.
Later this afternoon you visit Skansen, the world's oldest open air museum, founded in 1891. It features 150 farms and houses from all over Sweden. There is a zoo with wild and domestic Nordic animals such as moose, bears, lynxes, wolves and wolverines. Skansen is the venue for traditional festivities, markets, folk dance displays and other local celebrations. While you are here, you will learn about traditional Swedish handicraft and folklore. This site is very popular with both local and international visitors.
