Thessaloniki Shore Excursion - This tour visits the sites associated with Philip II and his famous son, Alexander the Great (356 - 323 B.C.). Included are the archeological site at Pella and also Vergina, the first capital of Macedonia. You also have a photo stop in Veria, where St. Paul preached.

Phillip II united barbarian tribes to become the king of Greece. His son Alexander came to the throne at the age of 20 and had conquered much of the known world by the time he was 33. His death signaled the end of Macedonia's golden age.

Your first stop is Pella, the birthplace of Alexander the Great. At the archeological site you'll walk along the ancient city streets and through the agora (market area) and aristocratic residences. In the small museum you will admire the exceptional floor mosaics, dating from the 4th century B.C. and other relics of Alexander the Great's time.

Next you'll continue to ancient Mieza for a short visit at the school of Aristotle. It is here where the great philosopher taught Alexander the principles of philosophy.

Next you enjoy a short photo stop in Veria, where St. Paul preached, followed by an included Greek lunch with 1 glass of wine.

After lunch you'll drive to Vergina, the first capital of Macedonia. This is one of the most important sites of the region, and the highlight of your day is a guided visit through the museum housing the Royal Tombs and their treasures. You'll see the tomb of Phillip II and much, much more.

Finally you'll return to the pier in Thessaloniki to rejoin your cruise ship.
