This Valletta shore trip visits three charming and historic towns located in the center of the island of Malta. You enjoy short walking tours of Mdina, Rabat and Mosta, plus visit St. Paul's Catacombs.
After meeting your private licensed guide, you drive to Mosta. In the heart of Mosta is the incredibly beautiful basilica dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This tiny town's church has the third largest dome in all of Europe (the fourth largest in the world!). Its design is based on the Pantheon in Rome, and it survived a direct hit from a bomb in the Second World War that never exploded. Quite impressive for a small town that most people have never heard of!
Continuing the tour you'll drive to Rabat, another of the island's historic towns, famous for the 4th century catacombs of St. Paul. These underground cemeteries were used by early Christians and feature round tables, carved from the living rock, where families gathered to eat a farewell meal honoring their departed loved ones.
Finally, you'll walk across the moat and into the massive gates of the beautifully preserved medieval city of Mdina. Once the capital of Malta, it is a magical place. You will stroll the narrow, winding streets that look like a perfect movie set. You will see the Baroque cathedral, carved wooden shuttered balconies studding the limestone walls and small horse drawn carriages. You'll climb wide stone steps to the bastions to see the panoramic views of Malta's countryside. This is a wonderful stop for photographers to capture the beauty of the island.
