This Valletta shore trip is one of the most popular options for those who have already been to Valletta before. You visit small beautiful towns and a former military camp which has been converted to a working crafts village. As a bonus, you visit the catacombs of St Paul and a former Roman villa.
After meeting your private licensed guide at the pier you drive to the very center of the island and the town of Mosta. In the center of Mosta you will tour the incredible church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This tiny town has a church with the third largest dome in Europe (the fourth largest in the world!) It is based on the Pantheon in Rome, and survived a direct hit with a bomb in the Second World War that never exploded. Quite impressive for a small town that most people have never before visited!
The town of Ta' Qali, located nearby, was once a British WWII outpost, but has been converted to a village for local handicrafts. You will be able to watch local artisans at work blowing elaborate glass art pieces, intricately assembling original silver filigree jewelry, carving the local limestone, working metal, clay and more. It is a wonderfully interactive place to pick up treasures that will always remind you of your Malta visit.
Continuing the tour you'll drive to Rabat, famous for the 4th century catacombs of St. Paul. These underground cemeteries were used by early Christians and feature round tables, carved from the living rock, where families gathered to eat a farewell meal honoring their departed loved ones.
You also visit Domus Romano, an ancient Roman merchant's villa. It guards Roman artifacts that have been found throughout the Maltese islands, and beautiful floor mosaics.
Finally, you'll walk across the moat and into the massive gates of the beautifully preserved medieval city of Mdina. Once the capital Malta, it is a magical place. You will enjoy a stroll past the Baroque style cathedral, and through the narrow, winding streets that look like a perfect movie set. You will see small horse drawn carriages and climb the bastions to see the panoramic views of Malta's countryside from the historic walls.
