This unique Valletta shore tour visits lesser known but still important sites and towns. Included are Malta's prehistoric sites as well as three historic cities along Valletta's main harbor. It is a great option for people who prefer off the beaten path tours.
After meeting your private licensed guide at the pier you drive to the site of Tarxien. The megalithic temple remains of Tarxien predate Stonehenge and are located a few miles south of Valletta. The three stone temples built 5,000 years ago provide proof of human settlement and fertility worship during prehistoric times. The largest stone female fertility statue ever found was unearthed here.
Next you drive to Birzebbuga on the south side of the island to visit Ghar Dalam. This natural cave is about 450 feet long with massive stalactites and stalagmites. The cave held the remains of pygmy elephants and other animals that lived on the island thousands of years ago when Malta was connected to Europe during the Ice Age.
Next you drive back towards Valletta for the afternoon in three historic cities of Senglea, Cospicua and Vittoriosa. These all sit cheek to jowl across the Grand Harbor from Valletta and were the original settlements of the Knights of St. John. You will have the opportunity to visit each of the cities, and your guide will tailor your time according to your personal interests.
Highlights of the villages include Verdala Fort and Barracks, the Maritime Museum of Malta, the Inquisitor's Palace judgment rooms and dungeons or one of several magnificent churches. Some people just prefer to walk the streets and enjoy a leisurely lunch.
