This protected historical site was used as far back as the 4th century but the main monastery complex was carved out of the rocks in the 13th century. You will marvel at the amazing frescoes and mural paintings which can be seen in the former monk's cells and the chapel.
After visiting the monastery you return to Varna to visit the Orthodox Cathedral which was built in 1880 shortly after the Liberation of the Ottoman rule. The cathedral has a wealth of local religious art dating back from the 19th century. You will enjoy time to center yourself and contemplate among the paintings, icons, frescoes and lighted candles which lend to silence and peace in this beautiful space.
