TOUR DESCRIPTION

Private Volos Shore Excursion

This full day Volos shore trip visits the town of Kalambaka which is very famous for its monasteries which are perched precariously on pinnacles above the city. This site is one place that should be on everyone's 'bucket list' to see.

After meeting your guide you drive northwest from Volos through the fertile plain of Thessaly to Larissa, the capital of the province. This is the country of the Centaurs and the site of the battle of Pharsalla, where Julius Caesar defeated Pompey the Great. After your journey through the heart of Greece's mainland you arrive in the town of Kalambaka.

You enjoy a short stop for refreshments or shopping before visiting the famous monasteries.

Towering above the plain is the unique phenomenon of the Meteora. These vast granite rocks soar up hundreds of feet, and most of them are crowned with monasteries built 600 years ago. It is a fantastic and unforgettable sight.

Here on these pinnacles of rock, medieval monks took refuge from plundering bandits, and their communities were formed on the lines of the Holy Mountain of Athos. Of the original 24 monasteries only six are now inhabited, two of which have become nunneries against the expressed commands of the early founders.

The visit to the monastery of Agios Stephanos ( which is now actually run by an order of nuns) is relatively easy to negotiate. The approach to the Varlaam Monastery requires a considerable number of steps but is well worth the climb. The monastic buildings are of considerable interest and the view over the other monasteries towards the lofty Pindus range in the distance is stupendous.

Following a visit to two monasteries you return to Kalambaka to enjoy lunch (meal not included) before driving back to the pier in Volos. This excursion is without a doubt one of the highlights of a visit to Greece.

NOTE - In Monasteries ladies must wear a skirt and have shoulders covered. Men are not permitted to wear shorts. In some monasteries, wraps are provided. Comfortable non-slip shoes are recommended.

Mobility: NO wheelchairs
