TOUR DESCRIPTION

Zeebrugge Shore Excursion

This Zeebrugge shore excursion includes the most important highlights of both Ghent and Bruges. It is a very full itinerary for those who want to "see it all" in a single day. It is a nice option if you don't mind a quick pace and don't need a lot of free time added into your tour.

After meeting your guide in Zeebrugge you start your day in Ghent. Upon arrival you enjoy a short drive through the city and then you begin a more in depth look with a walking tour. At St. Michael's bridge you enjoy the city's most beautiful views in every direction. You see the Old Harbor with its Guild Houses and St. Michael's Church. It is by far the most photogenic spot in town.

You continue your walk in the "Kuip" or heart of the old city where many beautiful buildings are seen at each corner. In the heart of Ghent you see the Gothic Belfry Tower which dates from 1425. Almost as impressive is the Town Hall, which is a mix of architectural styles due to the various centuries through which it was built.

Later this morning you visit the highlight of Ghent, the gothic Cathedral of Saint Baaf. The cathedral is a living museum of sculpture, carvings, wrought iron work and art. The most important painting is "The Adoration of the Lamb of God" by the Van Eyck brothers. Your guide will provide descriptions of the many scenes in this triptych.

Before leaving Ghent you have free time to enjoy lunch (meal not included) in one of the many cafes.

Next you drive to Bruges where you enjoy a walking tour starting with the Beguinage. A beguinage, or begijnhof in Dutch, is a courtyard surrounded by small homes, typically surrounding by a wall and secluded from the local town by one or more gates. In the case of Bruges, the beguinage is also cut off from the town by canals and bridges. Pious catholic women who lived and dressed like nuns (though they did not take formal vows) lived in these small quarters. This tradition started in the 13th century. Poor and elderly beguines were housed by wealthy benefactors. The homes you see today are from the 17th century and the area is one of the most charming and tranquil in Bruges.

Very close by your guide will show you the Lake of Love. At one point, Bruges was a port city and the Reie River emptied into the harbor of Bruges at this location. Later the river was dammed and canals brought water further into the town. Today the lake is surrounding by a park and the water is graced by the symbol of Bruges, white swans.

Your walking tour continues as you explore the iconic Market Square which has been used as a market place since the year 958 AD. The square is filled with Gothic Revival buildings, a 250 foot tall bell tower, the famous Burg, rows of stepped facades and outdoor caf̩s serving Belgian specialties and beer. Your guide will provide detailed explanations about this beautiful square and its historic buildings. The square was pedestrianized in 1996 and has since become one of the most beautiful squares in all of Europe.

If time is available you have a short amount of free time to explore on your own, sample some chocolates, taste the Belgium beer or buy a souvenir.

Mobility: NO wheelchair
